Climate Week'26 at Baskin Engineering

Picture

Like last year, Baskin Engineering at UCSC organized a climate week in April. My students and I demoed our games. The tabletop game in my background might be familiar. And the AR game in the first image will have its main test soon - so stay tuned!

CHI'26 in Barcelona

Presenting one full and one journal paper at CHI'26 in addition to running our workshop on designing for the last-mile climate resilience! This year's conference had record participation numbers with over 5.000 onsite participants. It is crazy to see that many researchers from all over the world coming together. But - as always - it is lovely to see old friends and make new connections.

Judging at United Nations Reboot the Earth Hackathon

A UN hackathon initiative in Silicon Valley - how cool is that?!

The hackathon took place Nov. 7th-8th 2025 and I was part of judging all the amazing projects. A lot of the groups focused on AI-supported real-time information analyses and interactions. Definitely a couple of cool ideas.

CHI Play'25 in Pittsburgh

Time for CHIPlay in Pittsburgh!

I presented our work on doable and locally-adapted action cards to support bottom-up flood resilience, which is a work together with James Fey
and Katherine Isbister. In this Work-in-Progress, we present our approach of creating locally-adapted game content by mixing bottom-up and top-down approaches. The level to which content needs to be adapted to local contexts to support climate adaptation is an outstanding research question. Yet, a certain level is necessary to enable players/users to relate and be able to apply gathered information.

DIS'25 in Madeira

Catching up with old and new friends at DIS'25 in Madeira, Portugal! After a wild landing, I joined an excellent workshop on "Designing Ocean Futures Literacies" organized by Lauren and their team. And I presented our work "HCI for Climate Resilience"; the first full paper of my postdoc at UCSC.

DINACON'25 in Les, Bali

An exciting time at DINACON has ended - now I am also a 'dinasaur'. Unlike other conference, this one asks you to spend between 1-4 weeks in a more remote location and produce something onsite for the locals. I loved that concept and had the pleasure of meeting teachers from local schools to talk about their approaches to teach about waste management. Based on my research, I developed a 32 card set that is locally adapted to the cultural norms, resources and language.

Demos and Talk at Climate Week at Baskin Engineering, UCSC

Picture

First time demoing our prototypes with a broader audience at climate week! Both my student groups used the event to present their games and get feedback. The picture shows visitors around our AR stand.

I also gave a talk on "Technology-Enhanced Informal Learning for Climate Resilience". If you're interested, feel free to check out the slides here.
